Creative Healthy Snacks for Kids
If you have children, especially if they are picky eaters, you know how difficult it can be to get them to eat healthy snacks. Candy, chips, French fries and other calorie-filled foods tend to be their favorites. However, it’s important to brainstorm healthy snack ideas to keep your kids healthy and strong. Summer time offers wonderful fresh produce and tons of healthy options to keep your family feeling energized.
Fruit kabobs: This is a fun healthy snack that allows your children to select their favorite fruits and carry ‘em on the go. Much like kabobs that you grill for dinner, take a stick and stack sliced fruit on it. Slices of mangos, grapes, peaches, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, watermelon and more can make up this colorful treat.
Frozen yogurt: This healthy snack is so popular that there’s likely a little shop somewhere in your neighborhood. Instead of feeding your family ice cream throughout the summer, frozen yogurt is a healthier alternative. Healthy kids can enjoy this snack in moderation with healthy toppings, such as granola, nuts or fruit. Typical vanilla ice cream contains 275 calories, 15 grams of fat and 9 grams of saturated fat in a cup while vanilla frozen yogurt contains 221 calories, 6 grams of fat and 4 grams of saturated fat. Though this is a healthy snack in comparison to ice cream, it’s important to ask the frozen yogurt location if ingredients are all natural and how much sugar is added.
Cucumbers: Children don’t always love their veggies, and when they do enjoy them they often want to dip them in ranch dressing. Try slicing cucumbers and soaking them in Italian dressing. Sliced cucumbers are a great healthy snack for kids, and the Italian dressing adds a bit of extra flavor.
Smoothies: This healthy snack for kids is jam packed with great nutrition and can be a fun bonding experience with your children. Allow them to pick the fruit they like and create a masterpiece. These are great on a hot day when hanging out in the backyard! Recipe recommendation: 8 ouches crushed ice, 4 strawberries, ½ banana and 11 ounces plain nonfat frozen yogurt – blend together for about 20 seconds or until smooth. This healthy snack can be made up of the fruit of your choice. Have fun with it!
Apples and peanut butter: This is a classic healthy snack for kids, and it’s super simple to make! Cut a few apples and let your kids dip them in peanut butter, or you can spread the peanut butter on one side for them. Peanut butter is high in vitamin A and E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and fiber. We all know that apples are a healthy snack for kids; they contain fiber, antioxidants, Vitamin C and other great nutrients.
